Bangor High School
The Bangor High School Music Department offers students a variety of classes, including Advanced Placement Music Theory, Solo & Ensemble, Music Survey, and seven different performing groups: Chorus, Chamber Choir, Jazz Choir, String Orchestra, Fiddlers, Concert Band and Jazz Band. Students in these groups participate in the Maine Music Educators Association’s District 5 Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Festivals, the State Vocal and Instrumental Jazz Festivals, the All State and Jazz All State Music Festivals, and both state and national Large Group festivals. Performances each year include our traditional Holiday Concert, All City Band, Orchestra and Chorus concerts, the Spring Concert, and Pops Night, which features vocal and instrumental Jazz groups from grades 6-12. Many students are also involved in our fall productions of a musical. In addition, Band members march in the Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day parades, and perform at ceremonies honoring Pearl Harbor Day and U.S.S. Maine Day. Band members also play at football games, basketball games and tournament games in Augusta and Portland. The Concert Band performed at both inaugurations of Governor John E. Baldacci. Concert Band members have worked several times with one of the country’s finest music educators and conductors, Anthony Maiello, from George Mason University, both here in Maine and at GMU in Virginia. They also took part in master classes taught by members of the U.S. Navy Band from Washington, D.C. During alternate years, the Music Department participates in national festivals in New York City and Washington, D.C. At these Heritage Music Festivals, schools from all over the country performed, each one receiving written and taped comments from the adjudicators, as well as numerical scores. Our eight groups earned 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze awards. We also received the overall Festival Sweepstakes trophy, a testament to the quality and depth of the BHS Music program. In April 2010, the Band, Chorus and Orchestra performed on the plaza in front of the Lincoln Memorial and at the Navy Memorial in downtown Washington, D.C. This Spring we will be traveling to Riverside Church in New York City to participate in another Heritage Music Festival. Strike Up The Band . . . . . . . . . R.B. Hall
